Satellite Observations of the Contrasting Response of Trees and Grasses to Variations in Water Availability
2019
Interannual variations in ecosystem primary productivity are dominated by water availability. Until recently, characterizing the photosynthetic response of different ecosystems to soil moisture anomalies was hampered by observational limitations. Here, we use a number of satellite-based proxies for productivity, including spectral indices, sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, and data-driven estimates of gross primary production, to reevaluate the relationship between terrestrial photosynthesis and water. In contrast to nonwoody vegetation, we find a resilience of forested ecosystems to reduced soil moisture. Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and data-driven gross primary production ind…
Degradation of fluoride-free MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-53(Fe) in water: Effect of temperature and pH
2016
Abstract The degradation in liquid water of two iron-containing MOFs MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-53(Fe) synthesized in fluoride-free conditions was studied. It was found that dispersing the MOFs in deionized water (1 mg/mL) results in the decrease of pH to 2.9 for MIL-100(Fe) and to 4.5 for MIL-53(Fe). Given this finding the stability of the MOFs in liquid water was characterized under two different sets of conditions: 1) reflux in water at 100 °C under obtained pH and 2) at ambient temperature under adjusted pH 7. After reflux of MIL-100(Fe) at 100 °C its XRD pattern remains unchanged, however a strong decrease of its BET surface area and appearance of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles point out to a parti…
Sea level and climate forcing of the Sr isotope composition of late Miocene Mediterranean marine basins
2014
Sr isotope records from marginal marine basins track the mixing between seawater and local continental runoff, potentially recording the effects of sea level, tectonic, and climate forcing in marine fossils and sediments. Our 110 new Sr-87/Sr-86 analyses on oyster and foraminifera samples from six late Miocene stratigraphic sections in southern Turkey, Crete, and Sicily show that Sr-87/Sr-86 fell below global seawater values in the basins several million years before the Messinian Salinity Crisis, coinciding with tectonic uplift and basin shallowing. 87Sr/86Sr from more centrally located basins (away from the Mediterranean coast) drop below global seawater values only during the Messinian S…
MAST-2D diffusive model for flood prediction on domains with triangular Delaunay unstructured meshes
2011
Abstract A new methodology for the solution of the 2D diffusive shallow water equations over Delaunay unstructured triangular meshes is presented. Before developing the new algorithm, the following question is addressed: it is worth developing and using a simplified shallow water model, when well established algorithms for the solution of the complete one do exist? The governing Partial Differential Equations are discretized using a procedure similar to the linear conforming Finite Element Galerkin scheme, with a different flux formulation and a special flux treatment that requires Delaunay triangulation but entire solution monotonicity. A simple mesh adjustment is suggested, that attains t…
